First of all, this is a MOST EXCELLENT book on the subject! It has some VERY pertinent and TIMELY information in it! A MUST-READ! 😉 [Though ONE thing in the book I DO NOT agree with is when it “claims” that Christians are no longer required to participate in the Lord’s 7th day BIBLICAL Sabbath and BIBLICAL holidays! For we must STILL celebrate those things, people! For the Lord is the same today, yesterday, and evermore! He hails from EVERLASTING!]
Because lets face it………Matthew 28: 19-20 is probably one of THE MOST difficult bible passages to follow and apply to one’s life, ESPECIALLY when one is “shy” or somehow “socially inept”.
You may reason within yourself : “but people don’t really listen to what I say anyways, so why would they listen to me about the things of God?”
But one thing is for sure……Jesus Christ has commanded us in Matthew 28: 19-20 to “make a disciple of all nations” as the following bible passages illustrate:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” [Matthew 28:18-19]
So what’s a shy person to do, you may ask?
Well, the truth is, the Lord Jesus Christ gave each and every one of us specific gifts in life and we are to use those gifts for HIS glory! For example, certain people may be shy and social situations are difficult for them. However, God made them good in OTHER areas in life, in order to make up for it. For example, lets say a person’s REALLY shy. And though they may be extremely shy and socially awkward towards others, perhaps the Lord Jesus Christ gave them the gift of photography, painting, video making, musical instrument making, writing, card-making, drawing, etc.
In other words, you don’t HAVE to stand on a street corner or in front of a Walmart/etc. and preach to people IN PERSON to effectively witness for Christ as there are MANY ways for shy people to witness for Christ. One can buy a webcam and make Youtube videos. Or one can create a WordPress blog (like me) and/or write “Notes” on Facebook, or write “anonymous letters” in the mail to people that need to be saved (just make sure to do so with Christ-like love and NO judgement on your part), or make Windows Movie Maker movies and/or use 3D Magix Creation Software (to create animated Christian movies/short films).
Or you could even custom design your own bible verse business cards/postcards/greeting cards/signs/posters with Zazzle.com to either randomly hand out to people (if you feel strong and brave enough to do so) OR to anonymously place on people’s car windshields or in other random places where people are most likely to see them/etc. And what’s great about Zazzle is that you can place pictures and text on the front AND back of the card/postcard/business card! (Another good site to try if you’re creating custom-made bible verse business cards is Vistaprint.com!)
An additional site that has some really good witnessing materials for sale is Ray Comfort’s ministry called LIVING WATERS!
HERE, you can view & purchase “gospel tracks”: http://store.livingwaters.com/gospel-tracts.html
OR view & purchase various books on the subject of “Christian witnessing”: http://store.livingwaters.com/books.html
But note: BEFORE you place your “gospel-tract materials”, please make sure to say a prayer OVER the materials: say a prayer that each individual card or postcard will go to the person it’s meant to go to, AND that the said person who receives the card/postcard will become saved in the name of Almighty Yeshua/Jesus Christ.
And true, some people who aren’t believers in Christ or followers of a different religion just MIGHT get offended at the “material(s)” that you use to witness to them. But so what. Not only does the Lord promise eternal blessings to those who suffer “persecution for righteousness’ sake, but IF you do a sort’ve “place cards and run” witnessing style: A) You won’t have to be there to personally see their “rejection” of your materials in person and B) the Lord Jesus Christ promises eternal rewards to those who suffer for the case of righteousness if they DO see you and bicker about the materials they see you placing there!
In fact, Jesus said in John 5:10-12:
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you” [John 5:10-12]
Jesus also said in John 15: 18-25:
“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also” [John 15: 18-25]
So yes, we WILL likely come up against some clamour and opposition during our “witnessing” (even if it’s done in a sort’ve hit and run witnessing style — such as placing custom made business cards with bible verses on car windshields in a parking lot somewhere). Because either someone will actually SEE you place the cards on the windshields/etc. and start to harass you or complain OR the people around you that know you (friends, family, coworker) will start haranguing you for being Christian. But the truth is, if you’re NOT being persecuted in SOME way, shape or form, that means you’re doing it wrong.
(That doesn’t mean however, that non-believers will never suffer from “temptation”, they most certainly WILL…..”hey man, come party with us tonight, bro!”, etc. etc……..SATAN TEMPTS ALL HUMAN BEINGS…….It’s just that the ones who attempt to live by God’s truth/the bible will be EVEN MORE tempted/persecuted than the average person or than the average Christian….
And the reason being is because that person/those people are more of a “threat” to Satan than the average human is. However, essentially ALL humans are a “threat” to Satan. Because humans are God’s most treasured creation and until a human is dead & gone, there is ALWAYS that potential chance that a human might be “Saved” in the name of Jesus Christ, thus, why Satan has to continually tempt ALL humans!)
I most recently had an experience where someone close to me more or less implied: “Look at you! Look at your life! What good has it done you to serve the Lord when you’re still single/have no kids/have never been married/are still working a part-time job, even though you have a college degree?”
Well, quite frankly, that kind’ve reminded me of the story of Job (pronounced Yobe) in the Old Testament. When the angels came before the great & mighty Lord God to give their “reports” of the humans on Earth, Satan slipped in with them and God bragged to Satan about what a good & faithful servant Job (“Yobe”) was, to which Satan more or less quipped “oh yeah? it actually PAYS him to serve you, look how RICH he is, if you take away all that he owns, he will surely curse thee!”
So God took him up on the challenge and told Satan he could do whatever he wanted with Job’s possessions but that he had to spare Job himself. Well, Job was faithful to God. Satan got pissed. He once again quipped to God “if you take away Job’s HEALTH, THEN he’ll curse thee, for sure!” So, once again, the Lord God took Satan up on his challenge and allowed Job’s health to fail him, giving him painful boils all over his body.
That’s around the time when Job’s WIFE took one look at him and said “WHY DON’T YOU JUST CURSE GOD AND DIE?” I mean, it’s the same principle, here. The message from my relative was “what good has it done you to serve the Lord? LOOK AT YOU!” And I have to be honest, here….I was exceedingly glad when that happened, because it reminded me that to BE persecuted to such a degree signifies that the bible-believing Christian person is living RIGHT for God/Jesus Christ.
But it’s not just witnessing materials that let us witness for Christ and the wonderful gospel of Salvation and Eternal Life. We also witness for Christ by HOW we live our lives. Calling ourselves “Christian” on our Facebook page or on WordPress or at work/etc. only goes so far. What kind of movies or TV shows are we watching? Do we drink or cuss alot? What kind of music do we listen to? Do we have multiple tattoos running up and down our bodies? Are we angry and short-tempered people? Or are we loving, kind, generous, patient, nonjudgmental, genuine/unconditional, etc?
For example, if a person calls themselves Christian but then turns around and holds a MAJOR grudge against someone/etc. and lets it be known to several others, that’s not a very great witnessing tool. For it says to all non-believers “well, I guess it’s okay for Christians to hold grudges against people/etc, apparently since SAID CHRISTIAN is doing so”. But if a person is patient, loving, kind, generous, long-suffering, etc., that paints a whole other picture about just what a TRUE biblical-based “Christian” is supposed to be.
And the truth is, we ALL have our conversion story of how we came to faith in Jesus Christ. What’s YOURS? Tell it! Tell it to the world and don’t wait! Time is running short, people! We don’t have alot of time left before Jesus Christ returns to the Earth and once he does, that’s it, there will be NO second chances!
Someday, the heaven and the Earth are gonna pass away and a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH will be created and there will also be what’s called “the Day of Judgement” where ALL souls (meaning, ALL souls that have EVER lived upon the Earth) will be judged according to their works. Where will YOU be on that day? What will YOU say before a holy, righteous, pure God?
“Oh, I’m sorry Lord, my sin was just FAR too important to me while living on the Earth, please forgive me and spare me from the lake of fire?” Do you think the Lord Jesus is gonna listen? Despite his hundreds if not THOUSANDS of attempts he tried to make while you were living, to try to draw you close to him?
OF such souls, Jesus Christ will say: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity“ [Matthew 7:21-23]
However, the souls that WERE wise, willing, brave and humble enough to follow the commands of Jesus Christ in the bible (10 commandments, Sermon on the Mount teachings which EXPANDED upon the 10 commandments, as well as all New Testament commands, etc.) and that had 100% FAITH and TRUST in him, he will say: (“His lord said unto him) “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” [Matthew 25:21]
But lets face it. As humans beings living on this Earth, we CARE about what people think of us, what our friends think of us and most specifically what our family, strangers, and coworkers think of us. It’s human nature to want to feel loved & accepted by everyone (or atleast, most people). But this idea of “I need to be accepted before mankind” is a FALSE DOCTRINE from the pits of hell! Because men are fallible but the Lord God himself is NOT fallible!
And think about it folks, who would you rather have mad at you? Fellow men/mankind or God himself? Think about that one for awhile. What’s better? Being temporarily shunned on the Earth by fellow men by being a true biblical-based Christian and then enjoying eternity with Jesus Christ someday OR fitting in with family/friends/people at work NOW by NOT being a “Christian” but then experiencing an ETERNITY in the LAKE OF FIRE, later?
But basically, Christian witnessing comes down to THIS: FEAR or FAITH. Which of THESE do you have? How you answer this question will play into rather or not you can or will be an effective witness for Christ.
2 Timothy 7 says: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind“.
Hebrews 11:6 says: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”.
Usually, our lack of effective Christian witnessing comes from our FEAR of witnessing and our FEAR of witnessing comes from a LACK of faith and our LACK of faith comes from NOT FREQUENTLY READING THE TESTIMONY OF THE WORD OF GOD IN THE BIBLE (Old AND New Testaments!!!!)
Romans 10:17 states: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”.
This guy says it best when he explains about how we must pick up our cross DAILY and read the Word of God DAILY in order to spiritually mature & grow.
When you very first start going out on a limb to start “witnessing” for Christ, it can kind’ve be a scary experience (especially if you’re shy and not gifted with the talent of *social gab*). But with some baby steps and some bible reading and some praying and diligently humbling thyself before the Lord, you can learn to become a more effective witness for Christ.
Trusting the “spiritual promptings” of the Holy Spirit is KEY! For example, maybe one day you see an old lady slowly walking down the street in the heat of day and a small, still voice will say to you in your mind: “hey, you should drive by, roll down your window and see if the old lady needs a ride anywhere”. And ya know what? It could later turn out to be one of the best witnessing opportunities of your LIFE! Because the truth is, there are Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, Satanists, Buddhists, Catholics, Mormons all around us.
And when the Lord tells us to act and we DON’T, well, THAT is considered “willful disobedience” and will come at a PRICE! ;( (Perhaps the person you were “supposed” to witness to about Christ that day later died in a car accident later that evening, or your refusing to give the old lady a ride in the hot summer sun caused her to later die of heat exhaustion that very same day!)
However, even though Jesus Christ is “highly disappointed” in us whenever we fail to act on his behalf, he IS always willing and waiting to forgive us if we cry out to him in prayer and vow to never disobey him again! But DO be warned: the Lord’s patience CAN wear thin if we make “willful disobedience” a habit!
Remember the ancient Israelites after they fled the land of Egypt on Moses & Aaron’s promptings and God’s command to Moses? And how much they bickered & complained, in spite of what all God did for them? He got to the point where he wanted to destroy them ALL, save for Moses and his family, but Moses pleaded with the Lord on their behalf and the Lord decided NOT to destroy them all. However, imagine what it was like for the Israelites when MOSES’S patience wore thin……..
And the Lord Jesus Christ will oftentimes gives us an “opening” to witness to such people. Maybe you hear a couple of Atheists debating amongst themselves at work rather God might possibly be theoretically “REAL” or not. That’s when you can interject and tell both of them at the same time “yes, he IS real, and here’s why!” Or perhaps your non-believing coworker comes straight up to you one day and asks: “do practicing homosexuals REALLY go to eternal condemnation in the fire after they die?”
We must try to take advantage of ANY and ALL witnessing opportunities that the Lord gives us, no matter how hard & difficult they may seem! You can EVEN do what’s called a “pre-witnessing prayer”, that is a prayer like the following: “Lord, please give me an opening today to talk about you with others. And please give me the courage, faith and strength to follow through, once so. Thank-you Lord, amen”.
And just remember: whenever you feel afraid, just think of John 16:33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world”.
I pray that ALL souls that read this will become a more effective witness for Christ and will start witnessing like CRAZY before the Great & Mighty Day of the Lord comes. Amen.
